"WE WILL DO YOUR HOMEWORK"

Adam Underground follows the fall of a student-run, academic cheating ring
when a writer for the school newspaper threatens to expose its existence.

In April 2010, Workbench Productions offered a Filmmaking Apprenticeship for Newton high school students, providing them with invaluable filmmaking experience during the production of Adam Underground, a film shot at Newton North High School. This no-cost Apprenticeship enabled over 100 students to work closely both through observations and hands-on work in the creation of this professional 23 minute short. Paired with members of the film crew, the students used their creative, technical, and practical knowledge to gain varied experience -- from designing sets to learning about complex lighting set-ups and sound recording, and even acting in featured roles alongside professional SAG actors.

More than just a lesson in filmmaking, the Filmmaking Apprenticeship encouraged students to make the most of this opportunity by taking up independent projects of their own -- directing an independent Making of Adam Underground documentary, organizing costumes for our over 100 student extras, heading up food donation campaigns for local businesses to feed our cast and crew, and documenting the production experience on the blog on this website. Over the course of the production, Newton high school students learned not just how to make a movie, but gained inside knowledge and inspiration to generate their own large-scale creative projects.
